Cloud Drive

The LRZ offers each user 200 GB of storage space in its storage cloud (H: drive), which can be accessed via various interfaces on the Internet (Windows/Mac/Linux, mobile platforms).

The official documentation from the LRZ can be found here: https://doku.lrz.de/display/PUBLIC/Cloud+Storage

Brief information on use

Web interface: https://webdisk.ads.mwn.de

Log in using your LRZ ID (7 digits, in the format uf501xx or ru32nis).
After logging in, you will see a folder structure in the left window and the contents of the current folder in the right window. The top folder, "Home," is your own directory. At the bottom, you will find a folder called "mwntemp," which is readable and writable for all users and whose contents are deleted every two days. This can be used for data exchange (if you do not want the data to be accessible to everyone, you can put it in a password-protected archive, for example). In between, there are a number of folders assigned to the LMU faculties.

The storage cloud can also be integrated directly into the operating system (see Integration of H: drive).

Two further aspects are worth mentioning:

  • Regular snapshots are created from the stored data. This allows you to restore an earlier version of a file. For more information, see the LRZ documentation.
  • Online storage is, strictly speaking, "personal" storage. It is not suitable for making files available to third parties. If data is to be made available to multiple users, you can request the allocation of project folders.

Providing (large) files

If you want to make files available to third parties at short notice in a size that cannot be reasonably transferred by email, special web services are available. For data that you would rather not store on commercially operated servers, the DFN's "Gigamove" service is available (unlike the Storage Cloud, no activation is required for this). Address: https://gigamove.rwth-aachen.de/de

First, select the University of Munich under "Select home institution." You will then be taken to a login screen where you can log in with your campus login. It is possible to make files available via a download link (with password protection and description if desired) or to generate an upload link where a file can be uploaded. The storage period is limited to a maximum of two weeks, with a total of 10 GB available, max. 2 GB per file.

Another option is LRZ Sync&Share.
